Dwight "Spike" Evans Obituary (1930

Dwight "Spike" Evans, age 79 of Carlyle, died on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at his residence. Mr. Evans was born on June 27, 1930, in Bloomington, Illinois, a son of Roy and Minta (Rowe) Evans. He married Juanita Ballinger on August 17, 1952, in Neoga, Illinois, and she survives in Carlyle. Mr. Evans is also survived by a son - Darrell and wife Paulette (Kampwerth) Evans of Carlyle; a daughter - Deborah (Evans) Sorensen and husband William of Aurora, Nebraska; 5 grandchildren - Cynthia (Sorensen) Campbell and husband Joe of Grand Island, Nebraska, Nicole (Evans) Weh and husband Jered of Breese, Illinois, Carrie Sorensen of Lincoln, Nebraska, Sara (Evans) Siegmund and husband Andrew of Heyworth, Illinois and Eric Evans of Crown Point, Indiana. He was blessed with 8 great grandchildren - Joey, Cassie, Caitlin and Cayla Campbell of Grand Island, Braden, Ashlyn and Eli Weh of Breese and Sadie Siegmund of Heyworth; and also survived by 4 sisters - Jeanie O'Donnell of Burwell, Nebraska, Genevieve Rannebarger and husband Perry of Champaign, Illinois, Carol Iler of Bethany, Illinois and Linda Baldwin of Morris Illinois; a sister-in-law - Ruth Evans of Neoga, Illinois and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Evans was preceded in death by 3 brothers - Roy Evans and wife Evelyn, Dick Evans, Clarence "Barney" Evans and wife Cleo; a sister - Rowena Morefield and husband Harold and 2 brothers-in-law - Harold O'Donnell and Roth Iler. Mr. Evans served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952 on the destroyer, USS McKean. He served in the Korean War from 1950-1952. Mr. Evans moved to Carlyle in 1958, and worked as a bricklayer for over 30 years. He then worked at the Carlyle Wal-Mart for over 18 years. Mr. Evans was a member of the Carlyle Christian Church where he served as an elder and a deacon. He was a life member of Scott Lodge #79 AF & AM of Carlyle, V.F.W. Post 3523, Carlyle and the American Legion Post 404, Carlyle. He loved his God, country, family and his many friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 7, 2010, at the Carlyle Christian Church with Rev. Dallas Nickel, officiating. Christian burial will follow at Carlyle Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 6, 2010, 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at Zieren Day Funeral Home and on Monday from 9:30 A.M. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carlyle Christian Church, Case Halstead Library or VNA/TIP Hospice and will be received at the funeral home.
