Lee Patterson Obituary (1934 - 2009)

Edwin "Lee" Patterson was born in Makanda, Illinois on June 26, 1934, a son of Ernest and Ruby (Smith) Patterson. He married Nancy Fusco on October 12, 1979, in Greenville, Illinois and she survives in Carlyle. Lee served in the U.S. Army Paratroopers during the Korean Era, and after his discharge, received his Bachelor's Degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and his Master's Degree from Eastern Illinois University. He was a school teacher and had taught health, P.E. Drivers Ed, and coached basketball at Cobden, Jerseyville and Greenville. He was an assistant coach under Coach Dick Ruggles in 1964 when the Cobden Appleknockers won second place at the Illinois State Basketball Tournament. Edwin "Lee" Patterson died on Sunday, October 25, 2009, at his residence. He was 75 years of age. In addition to his wife Nancy, Mr. Patterson is also survived by 2 daughters -- Sandra (Craig) Riley of Edwardsville and Jamie Kelley of Anna; 4 sons -- Keith (Dawn) Patterson of Beckemeyer, Shane (Crystal) Lucas of Boulder, Brady Lucas of Patoka, and Eric Gulledge of Cobden; 13 grandchildren -- Brett Riley, Alex Riley, Kory Patterson, Dylan Kellermann, Dalton Smolley, Cody Gulledge, Brody Gulledge, Jamie Kohrmann & husband Kurt, Hollie Lucas & special friend Micah Sensel, Sarah Norton, Mason Lucas, Joshua Lucas and Landen Carter; and Lee's special dog, "Ruffy". He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James Patterson, and a step-son, Richard "Luke" Lucas. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle, with Rev. Darryl Bolen officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at McKendree Chapel Cemetery near Keyesport. Friends may call at Zieren Day Funeral Home Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Wed from 8:00 AM until service time. A luncheon will be held at the VFW Hall in Carlyle following the committal service. Memorials in honor of Mr. Patterson are suggested to the Carlyle High School soccer team, and will be received at the funeral home.
