Harry G. Schmidt Obituary (1925

Harry G. Schmidt, age 86 of Carlyle, entered into rest on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle. Mr. Schmidt was born on July 27, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of Harry L. and Stella J. (Ricketts) Schmidt. He married Genevieve "Dolly" Holzhauer on November 18, 1950, in St. Louis and she survives in Carlyle. In addition to his wife Dolly, Mr. Schmidt is also survived by a son - Barry Schmidt and wife Sheri of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; 4 grandchildren - Corey (Christina), Brian, Sean and Kayla Schmidt and 2 great grandchildren - Connor and Chase Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Stella Schmidt and a sister - Stella L. Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt served in the Army Air Corps in WWII and the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He also served in the Air National Guard with a total service of 34 years, earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was the commander/conductor of the 571st USAF Missouri Air National Guard's Band at Lambert Field. Harry was also the public school band director in the Carlyle High School and Grade School for 28 years. He was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ and the Reserve Officers association of the USAF. He was a director of the South Central Illinois Band Directors Association and was a member of the Retired USAF Band Directors Association. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle with Rev. Earl Menchhofer, officiating. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Breese. Visitation will be held at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Friday, January 6, 2012, from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. and on Saturday morning from 8:00 A.M. until service time. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Schmidt are suggested to Immanuel United Church of Christ or to the Alzheimer's Association and will be received at Zieren Day Funeral Home.
