Julius H. Holtkamp Obituary (1915

Julius H. Holtkamp, age 95 of Huntsville, Alabama and formerly of Carlyle, died on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in Alabama. Mr. Holtkamp was born on April 22, 1915, in Breese, Illinois, a son of Herman H. and Katherine (Feldman) Holtkamp. He married Loretta Clara Hartlage and she preceded him in death. Survivors include 5 children - David J. Holtkamp (Stephanie) of Huntsville, Carol J. Newman of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Herbert F. Holtkamp (Sue) of Springfield, Missouri, Susan M. Conkle (Edward) of Washington, Pennsylvania and Mark J. Holtkamp (Pam) of Birmingham, Alabama; 12 grandchildren - John Barnett (Shauna), Ben Holtkamp (Tonja), James Holtkamp (Elizabeth), Richard Newman, Michael Newman (Lisa), Sarah Benson (Keith), Amy Holtkamp, Lori Holtkamp, Gary Conkle (Elena), Lisa Conkle, Andrew Holtkamp and Colin Holtkamp and 6 great grandchildren - Jessica, Robert, Taylor, Madison, Owen and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Katherine Holtkamp; his wife - Loretta Clara Holtkamp; a daughter - Mary Catherine Holtkamp and a son-in-law - Robert Newman. Mr. Holtkamp attended St. Dominic's and left his children lasting memories with his stories of growing up in Breese, Illinois. He married Loretta Hartlage in 1939 and settled down to raise his family. In 1949 he and his brother- in-law Joseph Hartlage opened the Carlyle Lumber Company. He moved his growing family to Carlyle. He followed a number of years later with opening the Carlyle Ready Mix with four other partners. He threw himself into community projects belonging to the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and one year winning the float competition in the annual parade for Carlyle Lumber. He was an early supporter of the Carlyle Lake project and worked closely with Eldon Hazlet in the initial development. He returned numerous times after the lake was completed to enjoy it with family and friends. Ever the entrepreneur, in 1956 "Bud" and Joe decided to move their families to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They sold the lumber yard and went into a partnership with Merle Marine of Florida, an army buddy of Joseph Hartlage. They built homes in and around the Ft. Lauderdale area. With the sudden and untimely death of Joseph Hartlage in 1958, the partnership dissolved and "Bud" set his sights on a new endeavor. In 1961 he moved his family to Huntsville Alabama. Home of the "Redstone Arsenal" Bud saw this as an area of future growth and great opportunity. He purchased land and in 1961 "Waste Paper Stock" was opened. At that time primarily a recycling area for newspaper, he was assisted by David, Herbert and Susan in getting it off the ground. Now known as South Central Recycling it is entering its third generation of family management. He loved country music, family sing alongs, and baseball. He was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Carlyle at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 6, 2010, with Fr. George Mauck, officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Monday from 12 Noon - 1:30 P.M. In lieu of all other gifts, the family suggests memorials in memory of Mr. Holtkamp to St. Mary's Church.
