Mabel Van Dorn Obituary (1914 - 2008)

Mabel C. Van Dorn, age 93 of Carlyle, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008, at the Caring First Nursing Home in Breese. She was born on July 11, 1914, near Carlyle, a daughter of Henry and Ella (Frey) Mahlandt. She married Edward Van Dorn, and he preceded her in death on December 2, 1985. Mrs. Van Dorn is survived by 2 daughters, Betty Winkeler of Carlyle and Sherry Laux Mays and husband Tony of Troy, Illinois; 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Johnson and a brother, Clifford Mahlandt, both of Carlyle. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Van Dorn; a sister, Mamie Chandler; 2 brothers, Roy and Elmer Mahlandt and a son-in-law, Norbert Winkeler. Mrs. Van Dorn was formerly a waitress at Hi-De-Ho and Imming's restaurants in Carlyle, and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. A Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle with Rev. Steve Sommerer, offiating. Interment will follow at Carlyle Cemetery. Friends and family may call at Zieren Day Funeral Home on Friday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., and on Saturday at church from 9:30 A.M. until service time. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Van Dorn may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church or to the Ladies Quilting group at the church.
